Are AI Website Builders Good for Contractors? (Durable, Wix AI vs a Pro)

AI website builders got good, fast. Durable really does generate a working business site in under a minute, and Wix AI asks a few questions and hands you something that looks fine. For thirty bucks a month, no less. So if you are a contractor staring at a $3,000 quote from a studio, it is fair to ask: why not just let the AI do it?

Let us be straight, because pretending these tools are useless would be a lie. Here is where they genuinely help, and where they quietly cost you the thing you actually want, which is jobs.

Where AI builders are genuinely good

  • Speed: a live site in minutes instead of weeks.
  • Cost: a low monthly fee instead of an upfront project.
  • A starting point: better than no site at all, by a mile.
  • Simple needs: if you just want a basic online placeholder, they cover it.

If you have zero web presence and no budget this month, an AI builder beats staying invisible. No argument.

Where they quietly cost you work

The catch is that a website's job is not to exist. It is to turn a stranger into a phone call. That takes more than a tidy template.

  • Sameness: AI sites look like AI sites. Your competitor down the road generated a near-identical one. Nothing sets you apart.
  • Generic content: it fills your pages with plausible filler, not your real jobs, your towns, your voice. That is exactly what does not rank or convert.
  • Weak local SEO: real per-service and per-town pages, schema, and consistency (the stuff that gets you found) is not what these tools are built for.
  • Your photos, missing: nothing sells a trade like real before-and-after shots, and AI cannot take those for you.
  • You are renting: leave the platform and much of it does not come with you.

The honest recommendation

If you are testing whether you even want a website, start with an AI builder. It is cheap and fast. But if getting found and getting calls is the point (and for a contractor, it is), you will outgrow it quickly, because the parts that win jobs (real content, real photos, local SEO, a look that is yours) are the exact parts AI builders are weakest at. This is the same trap as the DIY platforms, which we cover in Wix vs hiring a web designer and is Wix good for a small business.

Rule of thumb: an AI builder gets you a website. A studio gets you a website that actually brings in work. If your site is a business tool, not a hobby, that difference is the whole game.

What we do differently

We build fast, custom sites for trades with your real photos, real service and location pages, proper local SEO, and a look that is yours, not a template everyone shares. Want to see the difference? FAQ

Quick questions

For a basic placeholder, yes. For actually getting found on Google and turning visitors into calls, they fall short, because they lean on generic content and templates and are weak on local SEO and real photos, which are what win trade jobs.
