Canasta Score Sheet

Canasta hands are worth hundreds of points and the game runs to 5,000, which is a lot of long addition on the back of an envelope. Add up each side's hand, enter it here, and the sheet keeps the totals, takes negative hands in its stride, and calls the game at 5,000.

Canasta card values and bonuses

A side's score for a hand is its bonuses plus the value of the cards it melded, minus the value of any cards still in its hands.

Card or bonusPoints
Joker50
Two, Ace20
King down to 810
7 down to 4, black 35
Natural (clean) canasta500
Mixed (dirty) canasta300
Going out100
Going out concealed200
Each red three100 (all four: 800)

Opening meld minimum depends on your side's score: 15 below zero, 50 from 0 to 1,495, 90 from 1,500 to 2,995, and 120 from 3,000 up.

How Canasta scoring works

At the end of each hand, each side counts two things. First the bonuses: 500 for every natural canasta of seven cards with no wild cards, 300 for every mixed canasta, 100 for going out (200 if it was done in one go from a concealed hand), and 100 for each red three, rising to 800 if one side holds all four. Then the cards: the value of every card melded on the table, minus the value of every card still in the players' hands. Red threes count against a side that has not made any meld, which is how a hand can come out negative. Add the two parts, write down the result, and the first side to reach 5,000 wins. Because the opening meld requirement climbs as your score rises, the sheet's running total also tells you how much you need to open with next.

FAQ

Canasta scoring: common questions

Each side adds its bonuses (canastas, going out, red threes) and the value of its melded cards, then subtracts the value of cards left in hand. The first side to reach 5,000 points wins.
