How to Get Your Business to Show Up on ChatGPT

A customer used to type 'roofer near me' into Google. Now a growing number open ChatGPT and ask, 'who can fix my roof in Lancaster this week?' The assistant does not show a page of options. It names a few, or just one. If that is not you, you never even knew the job existed.

This is not a fringe habit. Nearly 800 million people a week now use ChatGPT to answer questions and decide what to do next. So it is worth understanding, in plain terms, how it picks a business, and what nudges it toward you.

How ChatGPT decides who to name

ChatGPT does not have a secret ranking of contractors. It pulls from what exists about you on the open web and, when it searches live, from current pages: your website, your Google Business Profile, reviews, and mentions on other trustworthy sites. If your information is clear, consistent, and easy to find, you are an easy pick. If it is thin or scattered, you get skipped.

So the real work is not 'gaming ChatGPT'. It is making sure the honest facts about your business are out there, clean and consistent, so any AI can find and trust them.

What to do about it

  • Make sure your name, address, and phone match exactly on your site, Google, and directories.
  • Keep your Google Business Profile complete and active, with the right category and service area.
  • Have a real website with clear pages for each service and town (rented social pages are not enough).
  • Earn steady reviews. AI leans on them heavily to judge who is legit.
  • Get mentioned on other reputable local sites and directories.
  • Answer common questions in plain words on your site, so there is something clean to quote.

Check what it says about you now

Open ChatGPT and ask it to recommend a business in your trade and town, the way a customer would. See if you come up, and what it says. It is the fastest reality check there is. If you are missing, our free AI Search Readiness Checker shows you which signals to shore up first.

One honest note: AI can get things wrong or name you with outdated details. Another reason to keep your real information clean and current everywhere, so when it does mention you, it gets it right.

Where your website fits in

Every one of these signals traces back to a solid website with clear, consistent information, which is what we build for trades. See our services and work, learn what GEO is and how to show up in Google AI Overviews, or get a free review.
