What Is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)? A Plain Guide

GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization. In plain English: it is making sure AI answers (ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini) can find you, trust you, and recommend you. SEO got you into Google's list of links. GEO gets you into the AI's actual answer.

Before you groan about another acronym, here is the relief: for a local business, GEO is not a separate universe. It is the same clean, consistent, helpful groundwork as good SEO, done with AI in mind. HubSpot even has a whole guide on GEO on a small budget, and it comes down to fundamentals.

Why it matters now

More and more searches end inside an AI answer. The person reads it and acts, without scrolling to the old-school results. If AI answers keep naming your competitors and never you, you slowly lose work you never see. That is the whole reason to care.

The GEO fundamentals (that you already half-know)

  • Be consistent: same name, address, and phone everywhere online.
  • Be complete: an active Google Business Profile with the right category and service area.
  • Be clear: a page per service and per town, saying plainly what you do and where.
  • Be trusted: real, steady reviews and mentions on reputable local sites.
  • Be readable by machines: LocalBusiness schema on your site.
  • Be quotable: plain answers to real customer questions, the direct answer first.

GEO vs SEO: the honest difference

Ninety percent of the work overlaps. The GEO twist is writing clearer, more quotable content, leaning harder on structured data and consistency, and thinking about conversational questions ('who can do X in Y town') rather than just keywords. Do your local SEO well and you are most of the way to GEO already. Start with how local SEO works if you are new to it.

The takeaway: do not panic-buy a 'GEO package'. Nail the fundamentals, write like a human answering a real question, and you will show up in both Google and the AI answers. Same foundation, two payoffs.

FAQ

Quick questions

It is optimizing your online presence so AI answer engines like ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, and Perplexity can find, trust, and recommend your business. Think of it as SEO aimed at the AI's answer instead of the list of links.
